Backend Keywords
Backend keywords — also called Search Terms — are hidden keywords a seller adds inside Seller Central so a listing indexes for queries that don’t appear in the title, bullets, or description. Shoppers never see them, but Amazon’s search algorithm does.
How Backend Keywords Work
- In Seller Central, open the product and go to the Keywords tab.
- Enter search terms in the Search Terms field — up to 249 bytes.
- Amazon indexes those terms alongside the visible listing copy.
- No commas, no brand names, no competitor ASINs.
- Amazon ignores duplicates already present in your visible content.
Best Practices for Backend Keywords
| Rule | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Stay under 250 bytes | Amazon truncates and drops anything over the limit |
| Use synonyms and misspellings | Captures long-tail queries visible copy can’t include |
| Add foreign-language terms | Reaches bilingual shoppers on US and CA marketplaces |
| Skip words already in the title | Duplicates waste your byte budget |
| Avoid competitor brand names | Amazon can suppress the listing for policy violation |
| Refresh quarterly | New shopper phrasing emerges as your category evolves |
