An FNSKU is a barcode identifier Amazon assigns to every unit a seller sends into FBA. It ties a physical piece of inventory to a specific seller’s account so Amazon knows whose units are being picked from the shared bin when a customer buys the ASIN. The FNSKU is printed on the unit label that covers the manufacturer barcode, and it starts with the letter X followed by nine alphanumeric characters.
Why It Matters for Sellers
FBA is a commingled fulfillment network by default, but stickered FNSKU inventory is “labeled” — Amazon must pull your unit for your order, not another seller’s. That protects you from being penalized when another seller’s counterfeit or damaged unit ships against your ASIN. Getting the FNSKU wrong on inbound shipments causes receive errors, delayed check-in, and in some cases the entire shipment being refused. Every FBA seller should treat the FNSKU label as the single source of truth for FBA inventory identity.
How FNSKUs Are Generated
- Seller creates or claims a listing in Seller Central (an ASIN is assigned or reused).
- Seller converts the SKU to FBA and picks the labeling option: “Amazon labels” (paid) or “Merchant labels” (free — you print).
- Amazon generates a unique FNSKU per SKU-per-seller and provides a downloadable PDF label sheet.
- Every physical unit gets one FNSKU sticker over the original UPC/EAN before it enters the FBA network.
- On receive, Amazon scans the FNSKU to attribute the unit to your account.
FNSKU vs ASIN vs SKU vs UPC
| Identifier | Who Assigns | What It Identifies |
|---|---|---|
| ASIN | Amazon | The product page (shared across all sellers) |
| SKU | Seller | The seller’s internal catalog row |
| FNSKU | Amazon | The seller’s specific units inside FBA |
| UPC / EAN | GS1 (manufacturer) | The manufacturer’s product globally |
One ASIN can have dozens of FNSKUs across different sellers of the same item. Only the FNSKU tells Amazon which unit belongs to you.
