An Amazon referral fee is the per-sale commission Amazon charges every seller — FBA or FBM — for the right to sell an item on the marketplace. It is calculated as a percentage of the total sale price (item + shipping + gift wrap), with a $0.30 per-item minimum in most categories.
How Referral Fees Are Calculated
- Amazon assigns each product a category (Home & Kitchen, Electronics, Beauty, etc.).
- Each category has a published referral-fee rate — typically 8%, 15%, or 17%, with a few exceptions (Amazon Devices Accessories = 45%, Jewelry above $250 = 5%).
- The fee is applied to the total sale price, not the item price alone.
- Amazon deducts the greater of the percentage or the $0.30 minimum from the seller’s disbursement.
- Refunded orders return the referral fee minus a Refund Administration Fee (the lesser of $5.00 or 20% of the referral fee).
Common Referral Fee Rates
| Category | Rate | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Home & Kitchen, Toys, Beauty (over $10) | 15% | $0.30 |
| Electronics | 8% | $0.30 |
| Consumer Electronics Accessories | 15% | $0.30 |
| Clothing & Accessories | 17% | $0.30 |
| Amazon Devices Accessories | 45% | $0.30 |
| Jewelry (portion over $250) | 5% | $0.30 |
| Grocery (over $15) | 8% | $0.30 |

Why It Matters for Sellers
Referral fees are the single largest deduction from most sellers’ revenue and set the ceiling on gross margin. A product with 30% COGS in a 15% category leaves ~55% to cover FBA fees, PPC, storage, and profit. Sellers who miscategorize a product often pay 15% when 8% applied, or vice versa — and Amazon’s automated re-categorization can silently move a product into a higher-fee bucket.
